Loki’s Connection with Avengers: Endgame

The Loki series directly results from the events in Avengers: Endgame, where the Avengers used Pym Particles to time travel and create multiple new timelines. In one of those timelines, Loki escapes with the Tesseract, and this is the Loki the series follows.

Loki Season 1 Recap: TVA Explained

The Time Keepers are self-appointed time-cops who believe there’s only one correct timeline, and anything different should be erased. They set up the TVA (Time Variance Authority) to ensure the Sacred Timeline stays on track. The TVA exists outside regular time. But, surprise! The Time Keepers are a cover for the real boss, Kang.

Loki Season 1 Recap: Timeline Pruning And Alioth Explained

Loki’s Season 1 reveals that pruning a timeline means feeding everything from that timeline to a cosmic beast called Alioth, basically genocide.

Loki Season 1 Recap: Sacred Timeline Explained

loki-sacred-timeline-explained

The Sacred Timeline is the specific path that the Time Keepers consider “sacred” for all timelines. Each timeline can have minor differences, but they must stay within certain limits set by the Time Keepers, shown as dotted lines in the above diagram. A nexus is an event in any timeline that causes too much deviation from the Sacred Path. The Time Keepers look for this and prune timelines.

Variant Explained

The person responsible for the nexus event is marked as a Variant and is brought to the TVA for pruning after the genocide of that timeline. The show’s lead, 2012 Loki and Sylvie (a female version of Loki) are Variants.

Loki Season 1 Recap: Short Summary Of All Episodes

Loki Recap: S01E01 (Glorious Purpose) Explained

2012-Loki is captured by the TVA for taking the Tesseract (nexus event). An agent named Mobius, chasing another Loki Variant causing trouble, asks 2012 Loki to help catch the troublemaker. Loki agrees to cooperate to save his own skin.

Loki Recap: S01E02 (The Variant) Explained

Loki realizes that apocalyptic events can hide a Variant’s presence because any changes before the disaster are too small to detect. He tests this by causing chaos in Pompeii moments before the volcanic eruption, and the TVA doesn’t notice. Their search takes them to an apocalyptic event in 2050, Alabama. Here, they discover the other female Loki Variant. She’s been creating diverging timelines by triggering stolen reset charges and escapes through a time portal; Loki goes with her.

Loki Recap: S01E03 (Lamentis) Explained

Sylvie discloses that all TVA employees are variants who once had a life on another planet, like Earth and the TVA folks don’t know this. Sylvie returns to the TVA to disrupt their operations. Loki tries to ally with her, but they end up fighting. Ravonna intervenes, and Loki uses a temporal pad to transport himself and Sylvie to 2077 on Lamentis-1, a moon about to be destroyed. The device runs out of power, leaving them stuck. They board a train to reach an arc with a TemPad charger, but Loki’s antics get them thrown off, and the pad is destroyed. They try to reach the Arc on foot, but it’s destroyed by a planet fragment, leaving them and the moon’s inhabitants in peril.

Loki Recap: S01E04 (The Nexus Event) Explained

Sylvie’s backstory reveals her childhood abduction by the TVA and her life on the run behind apocalypses. On Lamentis-1, a potential romantic connection between the Loki variants causes a massive Nexus event, leading to their arrest by the TVA. Mobius and B-15 uncover that their memories were tampered with, and they were once variants. As Loki and Sylvie confront the Time Keepers, they discover the Time Keepers are mindless androids. Ravonna purges Loki before he can confess his feelings to Sylvie, who takes Ravonna hostage to seek answers about the TVA’s true origins.

Loki Recap: S01E05 (Journey Into Mystery) Explained

In The Void, Loki meets other Loki Variants at the end of time, and a brawl ensues. Taking Ravonna’s TemPad, Sylvie prunes herself, while Ravonna seeks answers about the TVA’s origins from B-15. Sylvie arrives in The Void, is chased by Alioth, and is saved by Mobius. Mobius returns to the TVA with the TemPad. Loki and Sylvie enchant the beast, revealing a path beyond The Void as Classic Loki sacrifices himself to distract Alioth.

Loki Finale Recap: S01E06 (For All Time. Always) Explained

Loki and Sylvie reach the end of time, meeting He Who Remains, a version of Kang the Conqueror. Kang is revealed to be a scientist who united Kangs from various timelines; some cooperated, while others sought multiverse conquest, leading to a multiverse war. To restore order, Kang harnessed Alioth to prune timelines that he deemed were not sacred, and the TVA was created for that purpose. He offers Loki and Sylvie a choice: kill him and unleash chaos… or run the TVA with him. Loki wants to consider what Kang is saying, but Sylvie kills Kang.

Everyone in the TVA gets to know they are Variants. Ravonna leaves with the TemPad to an unknown timeline. Before killing Kang, Sylvie sends Loki back to the TVA, but he ends up in the past centuries before Mobius met him, which is why no one recognizes him.
